Learning while playing with integers

Hey guys,

So integers are of one those things that students and even adults can struggle with. Whether you're learning about them for the first time for basic math or you're using them as an adult to understand your debt you use integers more than you think. Who said though that integers can't be fun. In our math class we learned how to play with integers as we learned how to use them. By using manipulatives such as army men or balls or cards you can give kids a hands on experience of how to learn integers. In one of our examples they used army men. They used two different colours in which the dark green ones were positive and the light green ones were negative. By playing a game to understand addition with integers we can see how negative numbers can lead us to positive numbers and vice versa. If we used the army men to go to battle they would have light green vs dark green. Using the question such as -2+3 you would take away two light green army men to battle two dark green army men and whoever has more left over wins. So this gives you the idea that -2 + 3 = 1 because we matched two of both colour army men to end up with one of the dark green army men left. We also used the game war to understand integers. The black would be negative and the red would be positive in order to win the point you must be able to correctly identify what the outcome would be the fasted. Whoever has the most cards at the end would win. So if the cards were 4 black and 3 red it would look like -4 + 3= 1. This would be a great way to learn while having fun. I honestly really like these games as math was always something I dreaded to do. With these various activities we are learning about I realized that math doesn't always have to be that bad.

Well bye for now... come back next week as we discover a new activity for a new topic.
